Macugnaga
Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Italy
High in the Italian Alps at the foot of Monte Rosa's dramatic east face, Macugnaga is a tiny mountain village in Piedmont offering skiing in winter and hiking and mountaineering in summer, with a cableway rising from the village square to the Swiss border. The village holds a 13th-century church and linden tree, a 1707 church, a mountaineering museum, and a Walser Museum dedicated to the German-speaking community that settled the valley during the Middle Ages.
