This modest mountain village in Valle Vigezzo, Piedmont, Santa Maria Maggiore sits on the narrow-gauge Vigezzina railway that runs through the Italian Alps between Domodossola and Locarno, Switzerland. Recognised with an orange flag by the Touring Club Italiano, it draws visitors with an unusually dense café and restaurant scene for its size, several churches, and a calendar of recurring events including an international chimney sweeps' gathering each September and Christmas markets in December. Part of its territory falls within the Val Grande National Park.
