A water town on the outskirts of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao was established around 1,700 years ago and served as a trading hub for the surrounding countryside. Its 36 ancient stone bridges still span the canals, and Ming and Qing dynasty buildings line the riverbanks. Cafés and restaurants are concentrated in a compact centre, and the town was designated one of Shanghai's first protected historic cultural towns in 1991.
