Sitting on the Grand Canal in northern Zhejiang, Jiaxing is a historic water city with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants, reachable in under an hour by train from Shanghai. The wider municipality takes in Wuzhen and Xitang, two well-preserved canal towns, alongside the historic district of Pinghu. Long known as a silk and rice heartland of the Jiangnan region, Jiaxing holds national historic city status and sits within easy reach of Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Nanjing.
