Tomioka, in Gunma Prefecture, is home to the Tomioka Silk Mill, Japan's first full-scale mechanised silk-reeling factory, built in the early Meiji era and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 along with related silk-industry heritage sites in the region. At the city's western edge stands Mount Myogi, considered one of Japan's three great scenic mountain landscapes. The Nukisaki Shrine, the principal shrine of the former Kozuke Province, is also here.
