A riverside commune in Transylvania's Hunedoara County, Salasu de Sus sits on the banks of the Strei river at the foot of the Retezat Mountains. The area holds several medieval landmarks: the Mălăiești Fortress, begun in the early 14th century and completed around 1588, features a dungeon, stone ring enclosure, and polygonal towers. The 15th-century Cândreș knyazes' court and the Nemesh Church also survive in the village, alongside an 18th-century church in Nucșoara with interior paintings completed in 1779.
