Slovakia's largest and best-known spa town, Piešťany sits on the river Váh in the western part of the country and has been a centre for treating rheumatic conditions since the 19th century. The town holds a walkable centre with a solid food-and-drink scene, vineyards in the surrounding area, and a short drive to the Slovak capital Bratislava. First mentioned in records from 1113, it also serves as a base for visiting nearby archaeological sites at Moravany nad Váhom and Krakovany-Stráže.
