This walkable Norman town on the water, Louviers sits in the Eure department of Normandy with a centre well supplied with cafés and restaurants. The town has a long history in cloth-making — a tightly woven fabric called "louviers" was once produced here and prized for dressing people of quality, distinct from the coarser cloth of nearby Elbeuf. In 1441, King Charles VII granted the town its motto, "Loviers le Franc."
