A town in Eure-et-Loir drained by the Avre and Blaise rivers, Dreux has a compact centre with cafés, restaurants, and several historic churches, including the Église Saint-Pierre and the royal chapel, both among its listed monuments. The surrounding area includes vineyards and a Natura 2000 conservation zone in the Eure valley, noted for chalk grasslands and protected orchid species. Chartres, the département's largest city, lies a short distance away.
