Koprivshtitsa
Bulgaria
This little Bulgarian village in the Sredna Gora mountains is where the first shot of the April Uprising against Ottoman rule was fired in 1876, and it has preserved the architecture of that National Revival era across hundreds of restored buildings, cobbled streets, stone bridges, and Orthodox churches. Every five years since 1965, it hosts the National Festival of Bulgarian Folklore, the country's main showcase for amateur folk performance. The village sits on the Topolnitsa River in highland terrain east of Sofia.
