Bátonyterenye

A compact Hungarian town in Nógrád County beside the Zagyva river, at the foot of the Mátra mountains, Bátonyterenye sits within the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark. The town was formed in 1984 by merging several settlements, with written records of the area dating to 1216 and archaeological evidence of habitation from around 1500 BC. The 19th-century writer Lajos Abonyi was born here.
