Szecseny
Nógrád · Hungary
This compact Hungarian town in Nógrád county, Szécsény sits at the foot of the Cserhát hills near the Slovak border and within the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark. Its most significant historical moment came in 1705, when Francis II Rákóczi convened a diet here that elected him ruling prince and shaped the course of the Hungarian war of independence. The medieval Franciscan monastery survives as the town's oldest landmark, and the Kubinyi Ferenc Museum covers regional history and ethnography. A Palóc cultural festival is held here annually.
