Walkable town in Extremadura's Badajoz province with a centre full of cafés and restaurants, Zafra is the birthplace of Fray Ruy Lopez, author of one of the first European treatises on chess, and the humanist Pedro de Valencia. It serves as the capital of the Zafra–Río Bodión comarca, with mountains nearby and UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
