Usuki's Stone Buddhas, designated a National Treasure, are among the most significant rock-carved Buddhist images in Japan, drawing visitors to this coastal town on the east coast of Ōita Prefecture. The town is also known for soy sauce production and retains the street layout and architecture of a former castle town, with a concentration of historic buildings in the centre.
