Beppu, on the eastern coast of Kyushu's Ōita Prefecture, is one of Japan's three great hot spring cities, known above all for the Hells of Beppu — a collection of visually dramatic geothermal pools that draw visitors from across the country. The city sits on the water with mountains close behind, and its centre supports a dense café and restaurant scene. Incorporated as a city in 1924, Beppu celebrated its centenary in 2024.
