Tomar
Médio Tejo · Portugal
Founded within the walls of a Knights Templar fortress in the late 12th century, Tomar is a Portuguese town on the water with a walkable centre dense with historic churches, cafés, and restaurants. The Convento de Cristo — built under the orders of Gualdim de Pais, fourth Grand Master of the Knights Templar in Portugal — anchors the town, which rose to further prominence in the 15th century as a hub of Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator. Vineyards surround the area, and several UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
