St. Gallen
St. Gallen · Switzerland
The Abbey of Saint Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose library holds manuscripts dating to the 9th century, is the centrepiece of this eastern Swiss city. Founded around a 7th-century hermitage, St. Gallen has grown into a regional hub with a dense café and restaurant scene, many historic churches in the centre, and mountain terrain on its doorstep. The city also serves as a gateway to the Appenzellerland region and has strong transport links to neighbouring Germany and Austria.
