Birthplace of the Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca and the mathematician Luca Pacioli, Sansepolcro is a compact Tuscan town on the upper Tiber, near the borders of Umbria and Marche. Founded in the 11th century and elevated to a diocese by Pope Leo X in 1520, it has an unusual concentration of churches for its size, a lively café scene, and is home to the Buitoni pasta company, founded here in 1827. Vineyards in the surrounding countryside add to the draw.
