A large Moroccan city on the right bank of the Bou Regreg river, directly across from the capital Rabat, Salé preserves a historic medina with major monuments from the Marinid period (13th–15th centuries), including a grand mosque built in 1196 under the Almohad ruler Yacoub al-Mansour. The city has a walkable centre with cafés and restaurants, and its medina is linked to Rabat by tramway. Founded in the 11th century, Salé became a medieval merchant port before briefly operating as an independent pirate republic in the 17th century.
