Ptuj

Slovenia

Slovenia's oldest recorded town, Ptuj sits on the Drava River in the Styrian wine country of the northeast, with a walkable historic centre that grew around a hilltop castle. Originally a Roman military fort at a strategic river crossing, the town has been continuously settled since the late Stone Age. It is also known for the Kurentovanje festival, and vineyards in the surrounding hills add to its appeal as a base for the region.
