This Slovenian town in the Šalek Valley, Velenje was purpose-built and officially opened in 1959 around its coal-mining industry, with the Velenje Coal Mine — operating since 1875 and still active — housing the Slovenian Coal Mining Museum in its older section. The Kamnik–Savinja Alps rise to the west and the Pohorje Mountains to the east, and centuries of Habsburg ownership left a legacy of castles and manors across the area. Gorenje, Slovenia's largest exporter, is also headquartered here.
