This small Cumbrian coastal town on the Solway Firth, Maryport grew around a harbour built at the mouth of the River Ellen in the mid-18th century and sits above the site of the Roman settlement of Alauna. The centre has cafés and restaurants within walking distance of the waterfront, the streetscape carries a concentration of listed buildings, and the Lake District National Park lies a short distance to the south-east, with Hadrian's Wall country — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — in the wider region.
