Mariembourg
Arr. Philippeville · Belgium
Founded in 1542 on the orders of Mary of Hungary, governor of the Habsburg Netherlands, Mariembourg is a small Belgian village in the Province of Namur whose star-shaped fortress town layout still shapes its streets today. The original fortifications came down in 1853, though the former arsenal survives, along with a church from 1542 and a Neo-Gothic former town hall. The wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
