Manfredonia

Founded in the 13th century by Manfred of Sicily, son of Emperor Frederick II, this Apulian coastal town sits on the gulf that bears its name, at the southern edge of the Gargano National Park. The compact centre holds a concentration of historic churches, a medieval castle, and the 16th-century cathedral, with cafés and restaurants within easy reach. Mountains rise to the north, and the town serves as the seat of an archdiocese.
