This wine-country town in Apulia's Foggia province, Cerignola has a walkable centre with a real café and restaurant scene and a concentration of historic churches. The town holds an outsized place in European history: the 1503 Battle of Cerignola, in which Spanish forces under Gonzalo de Córdoba defeated the French for control of the Kingdom of Naples, was fought here. A 1731 earthquake destroyed most of the medieval quarter, though the town retains listed heritage architecture and sits within a wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
