Machynlleth, a compact market town in the Dyfi Valley in Powys, Wales, claims the title of "ancient capital of Wales" as the seat of Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh Parliament in 1404, with the parliament building still standing as its most prominent landmark. The town holds a weekly Wednesday market, sits in mountain terrain with trails for mountain biking nearby, and has a visitor centre at the Centre for Alternative Technology. The first Laura Ashley shop opened here in 1961.
