Los Teques, the capital of Venezuela's Miranda state, sits on the banks of the Río San Pedro in the Cordillera de la Costa, at high elevation above Caracas and closely linked to the capital as one of its main satellite cities. Named for the indigenous Teques people, the city was the birthplace of Guaicaipuro, their leader who resisted Spanish conquest. The area later became a centre for sugarcane and coffee cultivation. Visitors should be aware that safety requires attention, including during daylight hours.
