Claimed as the geographical centre of Bavaria, Kipfenberg is a tiny market town in the Eichstätt district where the Altmühl river runs through the centre and a hillside castle and fortress rise above it. The surrounding area offers scenic viewpoints, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. Franz Widnmann, a 19th-century painter and professor at Munich's Royal School of Applied Arts, was born here.
