This Bavarian town at the confluence of the Altmühl and Danube rivers, Kelheim sits below the Befreiungshalle, a monument on a ridge between the two river valleys that offers views over the surrounding hills. The town also marks the southern terminus of the Main-Danube Canal, where it meets the Danube. A compact centre with cafés and restaurants makes it a practical base for exploring the wider region, which is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
