Karkamış district
Gaziantep · Türkiye
A modest town on the Euphrates River in southeastern Turkey, Karkamış sits beside the ruins of ancient Carchemish, a Bronze Age city that some traditions associate with the Epic of Gilgamesh. The district also functions as a border crossing into Syria and produces pistachio, olive, and mint crops across its agricultural plain. A protected habitat for Euphrates turtles lies within the district.
