Halfeti sits along the flooded Euphrates gorge in southeastern Türkiye, where several buildings remain half-submerged following the damming of the river at Birecik in the 1990s — a sight that draws visitors to this modest Şanlıurfa town. The original settlement was relocated after most of its villages went underwater, and the area around the new town offers scenic viewpoints over the river. Halfeti is also associated with an internet legend claiming it was the only place on Earth where black roses grew.
