A gateway city to the Karkonosze mountains in southwestern Poland, Jelenia Góra has a walkable historic centre with a restored baroque marketplace, 17th-century town hall, and baroque churches, alongside the spa district of Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój. The city sits on the River Bóbr, with ski resorts at Karpacz and Szklarska Poręba a short drive away, and the Karkonosze National Park headquartered in the city's Sobieszów neighbourhood. Granted town rights in 1288, it developed through trade links between the Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia, and Eastern Europe.
