Coastal city on the São Paulo shore with a strong beach profile, Itanhaém holds the distinction of being the second-oldest municipality in Brazil, founded in 1532, after nearby São Vicente. Officially designated a balneário — a state-recognised beach resort — it draws a large seasonal influx between December and February, with mountains visible inland and UNESCO-listed sites in the wider region.
