Idrija
Slovenia
Idrija's mercury mine, the second-largest in the world, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012 — listed jointly with the Spanish mine at Almadén — and sits at the centre of this small town in the green hills of western Slovenia. The town is equally known for Idrija Lace, a bobbin tape lace with protected geographical indication status, and for žlikrofi, a filled pasta with similar European protection. The surrounding Idrija Geopark covers the entire municipal area.
