Gongju served as the capital of the Baekje kingdom from 475 to 538 CE, and the ancient sites that survive from that era — including Gongsanseong fortress and the Songsan-ri royal tombs — are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage designation. The Geum River runs through the centre of the city, which sits in mountain terrain in South Chungcheong Province. Each October, Gongju co-hosts the Baekje Cultural Festival with neighbouring Buyeo.
