Sitting directly on its own lake in the Vosges mountains of northeastern France, Gérardmer is a compact town with a café and restaurant scene that would suit a town twice its size, scenic viewpoints across the surrounding highlands, and a winter ski station at La Mauselaine. It also hosts an international fantasy film festival, and its lakeside setting has earned it the longstanding nickname "Perle des Vosges" — a phrase attributed to Abel Hugo, brother of Victor.
