Foix

Ariège · France

The castle of the Counts of Foix, classified as a historic monument since 1840, rises on a rock above this modest medieval town at the foot of the Pyrenees in southwestern France's Ariège department. The Ariège river runs through the town, which has a good spread of cafés and restaurants for its size. The 12th-century church of Saint-Volusien is also listed, and the surrounding area holds two Natura 2000 protected natural sites.
