Espinhal, a compact village in the Penela municipality of central Portugal, has been shaped since the 16th century by iron and copper smelting and paper-making, trades that grew along a historic north-south road still marked by a weekly market. The village played a role in the Napoleonic-era French invasions, and several manor houses belonging to noble families remain. The wider region has UNESCO World Heritage sites nearby.
