Sitting on the summit of Monte Erice above Trapani in western Sicily, this medieval hilltop village retains its ancient Elymian-Punic fortifications, cobbled streets, and an unusual density of churches. The historic centre — listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia — draws visitors for its viewpoints over the Tyrrhenian coast and its lively restaurant scene, while the Ettore Majorana Foundation has made Erice an international hub for scientific conferences. The surrounding municipality also produces wine under the Erice DOC designation, with beaches and hiking trails accessible nearby.
