Elze

Germany

This small town on the river Leine in Lower Saxony, Elze traces its origins to a castle established by Charlemagne around 800, which also gave rise to the missionary diocese that became the Bishopric of Hildesheim. The old town centre retains half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries alongside buildings reconstructed after a fire in 1824, with cafés and restaurants in the central core near the church of Saints Peter and Paul.
