El Progreso

Guatemala

A small town in the mountain terrain of Guatemala's Jutiapa department, El Progreso — originally named Achuapa, a Nahuatl word meaning "river of achiote" — sits near the confluence of the Morán, Chiquito, and Ostúa rivers. The area produces cigars, leather goods, furniture, tiles, and mud bricks, and the Pan American Highway runs just south of town, linking it to the departmental capital.
