A Transylvanian town in Cluj County where the Someșul Mic and Someșul Mare rivers meet, Dej sits amid vineyards and within sight of mountains, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region. Once the seat of Solnoc-Dăbâca County and later the capital of Someș County until 1950, it occupies a crossroads position linking Cluj-Napoca, Baia Mare, Bistrița, and several other regional centres.
