Romania's first medieval capital, Curtea de Argeș sits on the Argeș River where it cuts through the Southern Carpathians, and preserves some of the country's most significant Byzantine architecture. The 14th-century Princely Church is on UNESCO's indicative list, and the monastery cathedral serves as the royal necropolis. The town was birthplace to several major rulers of medieval Wallachia, including Mircea the Elder and Neagoe Basarab. A compact centre with cafés and restaurants sits close to the river, with the Făgăraș Mountains visible above.
