Ancient walled city on the Mekong River in northern Thailand's Chiang Rai province, Chiang Saen was founded in the 14th century as a Lanna Kingdom stronghold and holds well over a hundred archaeological sites within its old boundaries, most of them Buddhist monuments in the Lanna style. The original city walls and moat survive, and the town today has a café and restaurant scene that punches above its size.
