Ban Ho Mae Salong

Thailand

Tea plantations now cover the mountain slopes where Kuomintang soldiers once grew opium poppies in this highland village in Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand. The remnants of the Republic of China Army's 93rd Division settled here after the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949, and their descendants shaped a community with an alpine-like landscape and climate, cherry blossoms, and hill tribe villages nearby. The village has an unusual concentration of cafés and restaurants for its size, along with scenic viewpoints across the surrounding Daen Lao Range.
