High in the Sierra Nevada, Capileira is the uppermost village in the Poqueira Gorge and the highest point public traffic can reach on the road toward Mulhacén — the tallest peak on the Iberian Peninsula. It serves as the main base for climbing Mulhacén, typically a two-day ascent with a refuge overnight. The village has a Saturday market, a good spread of restaurants and hotels for its size, and retains a traditional Alpujarran character away from the main road. Since 2017 it has been listed among Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España.
