A compact town on the Oder river in southwestern Poland, Brzeg sits midway between Wrocław and Opole with a walkable centre of cafés and restaurants. First recorded as a trading and fishing settlement in 1234, it received Magdeburg town rights in 1248 and was ruled by the Piast dynasty from the early 14th to late 17th centuries as part of the Bohemian Crown within the Holy Roman Empire.
