Salt production with a history stretching back four thousand years defines Bad Reichenhall, a spa town in the Bavarian Alps of Upper Bavaria whose Alpine salt still holds a majority share of the German market. Set in a mountain basin ringed by the Chiemgau Alps and close to Salzburg, the town has been a recognised health resort since the mid-19th century and received the designation of Royal Bavarian State Spa in 1899. A walkable centre with cafés, historic churches, and scenic viewpoints in the surrounding peaks rounds out the offer.
