'Anah

This ancient Iraqi town on the Euphrates with roots stretching back to the Assyrian era, 'Anah sits along a long bend of the river in Anbar province. The old town was submerged when the Haditha Dam created a reservoir in the 1980s, and a new city was built to replace it. Islamic heritage survives on a river island called al-Bad, where an 11th-century octagonal minaret — built from stone and plaster, unlike most Iraqi minarets — still stands among older ruins.
