This village in Lazio's Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, Amatrice carries a heritage-dense streetscape and an unusual concentration of churches for its size, and holds a place on Italy's official list of most beautiful villages. The town was largely destroyed by an earthquake in August 2016, and any visit today takes place against the backdrop of ongoing reconstruction from one of modern Italy's most destructive seismic events.
